Vison for Practically Rhetoric

The purpose of this site is to interrogate the question of whether rhetoric is a practical art or merely an aesthetic, or even a corrupting one. Aristotle maintained,

“Rhetoric is useful because things that are true and things that are just have a natural tendency to prevail over their opposites, so that if the decisions of judges are not what they ought to be, the defeat must be due to the speakers, and they must be blamed accordingly.”

Was Aristotle right? Why does the term “rhetoric” get a bad rap? Does it deserve this reputation or is it simply misunderstood? Can understanding how rhetoric works be of practical value in one’s career?
